a farewell picnic

A coworker gave his two weeks 13 days ago and tomorrow, yes tomorrow, leaves with as much ceremony as a small studio can muster. It's inevitable that people at work leave, but it feels very strange. Bear with me as I get wordy here; I'm near the beginning of this journey into corporate America office culture. Coworkers as it turns out don't become family, they become statues in one's life. No matter the weather, no matter the time of year, you know where they will be located (any given workday and sometimes weekends). Every Monday morning one returns to spend hours and hours in this forest of cubicles filled with office statues. Then suddenly it happens, overnight one of the statues vanishes. It is a shock. All that is left behind is a coworker shaped hollow space (and probably a jar of mayo in the office fridge). I say, the thieves that steals our precious statues better have a good idea of where they are bringing them. Well, that's neither here nor there. Here is a flash doodle for my recently to be departed coworker. Thank you for all the flash tricks and vegetarian food. This feels like an obituary. *tear

painting for sarah - asking for directions

Pirate captain stops to ask the locals for directions.

Been working on this off and on in my freetime lately. (Mainly when my computer is loading and I have a minute free here and there to draw some lines.)

A friend of mine let me stay at her place in Seattle for a couple of days while I was out on her coast for a wedding. I gifted her with this as my small way to thank her for the accommodations. My friend works at Microsoft on the new Microsoft/Yahoo collaborative search engine at bing.com. Check it out if you haven't yet.

Small painting, 3 x 4 inches. Acrylic on a little gessoed block.

I had this idea for a painting ages ago, but it sat in the back of my mind waiting patiently to be made.

This was a neat little icon to make. I got to take the 5 lines of written music and turn it into 6 lines of TAB. Made in flash.

I am always commuting - Paintings for the Mansion Show

This summer there is going to be an art show called 'The Mansion Show' at Beebe Estate in Melrose MA that I got into. http://beebeestate.org/the_beebe_estate.html

My series for the show is lovingly entitled, 'I am always commuting'. It's a small painting series. The canvas sizes are 6"x10", 5"x7", 2 4"x5", and the smallest at 1.5"x1.5".

Lately, it feels as if I am continuously in a state of commuting. There are unexpected residual adjustments to living with a long commute. One gets bonus time to play games, read, study, listen to podcasts or people watch come rain or shine. But on the other hand one can't get to the post office or library before they close.

The best of both worlds.

This was probably the smartest thing I will ever have thought and I was 8. What I would have given to grow up and be a unicorn-mermaid. But alas, one can be happy with just the memories of running around their neighbor's pool as the rare princess unicorn mermaid, right?

The lovely Thom May of http://bridgewindsoup.blogspot.com/ recently bequeathed me some acrylic paints before he departed for sunsets over the pacific ocean. Here is a painting for his parting. Maybe abit of thanks for the paints too. I was unaware that he has been painting cats and text lately. We are of similar minds even with a continent separating us. *tears*.

Rock and Art 08

Rock and Art painting for the 2008 summer concert season. http://www.rockandart.org/ Acrylic on 30x30 inch gessoed board. My band for this program was Crosby, Stills and Nash. My amateur photo skills manifested themselves in losing a bit of the color. The richer green blues and lavenders don't seem to be present in the photo. Haha. I like the painting though. It expresses time, a deep appreciating for the beauty around us and strength of will to pursue into the unknown. Here we have a band that's been an influential voice of activism for generations. While known best for antiwar and counterculture themes they also commonly invoke sailing and nautical references. So one can see why I felt compelled to take a voyage approach. :)

Waiting in line at AnimeBoston - for Kristina

Back in May one inauspicious Saturday morning my cousin and myself excitedly set out to Boston to attend our first ever anime convention. It warranted to become an entire day of unrestrained unbridled exorbitant anime goodness. Anime Boston. Little did we know one needed to pass the gatekeepers known as registration. One did this by waiting in line. This 'line' meandered through multiple lecture rooms at the Hynes convention center and is the unrivaled winner of long ass lines. For 5 hours we stayed queued, surrounded by one interesting phenomena. Serious cosplayers. Two things occurred to me. 1) We are out of place in our casual attire of sweatshirt and jeans. 2) This is the largest collection of Narutos one could ever expect to see.

Have been working on this a little bit here and there in my free time for over a month now. Flash and a bit of photoshop magic.

Here we have the third acrylic painting in this ebay venture. Perfectly angsty in every way. :) I've always been fond of this painting, it reflects a certain level of frustration.
Coolest thing about this painting, only used four tubes of paint in creating it. A red for almost everything, a yellow and white for highlights and blue for making some dark spots and the cage. Painted this awhile ago.. I was participating in a lot of figure drawing at the time. There exist a bunch of paintings made about this time with nude figures in them. Haha. Many more figurative paintings like this to come. I'm sure. 12 by 12 inches on canvas. :) Ebay auction to be found here.
Auction ends Sept-16-07 17:19:45 PDT.

word girl party photos

Here are some photos from the WordGirl Premiere party!
We had this awesome wall of characters. Here I am standing in front of the extra of me (green shirt up and to the right!) with my old roommate Nichole (nicholekelly.com) Also here is a picture of me sitting by my desk with all my desk flare. Yup! That's the guy from reboot!

We had some a serious rice crispy bake off. You can see some of the variety of flavors here. Peanutbutter and jelly, espresso caramel, kid killer marshmallow peeps, chocolate frosted, apple cinnamon.... it was nuts. The very talented Lindsay Fisher was face painting and creating arm murals. I got a chupacabra chasing a goat.

i have worked very hard for my little slice of nothing

I got home from work on Friday and promptly made this in flash/photoshop very excitedly to express a thought that permeated my week. My birthday is coming up. Around 8am Saturday morning I exclaimed to my mum, "Mum.. Mum.. Look what I drew!!" She didn't seem impressed. She glared at me and said "why don't you paint be grateful for what you have". Hahahaha.

New painting up the ebay guys! Wiii!

This is a fitting painting to be #2 on my ebay venture as it is lovingly labeled as 'mr satyr why did i go to college?' or 'mr satyr for this i went to college?'. I could never decide which was more fitting. But this painting has a little story. This was an acrylic painting I did after work about a year ago. At this time i was working in oil painting restoration, which was a really awesome job.. but..... Going to work day in and day out, not having a car, endless streams of bills, and so began a feeling deep down in my gut. A feeling I think everyone knows. A dark grey spot kinda nagging, kinda restless, kinda worrisome, kinda lonesome, kinda wanting more, kinda expecting something. I was living out of my parents attic, was eating nothing but peanut butter and jelly. I've got the degree I always wanted, I can paint exactly how I've always wanted!.. but I was too busy running around making ends meet to paint. That can make someone feel very trapped. Not learning anything new. Stagnating. Thoughts running wild. Confused. Should be somewhere else, but don't know where that is exactly. So much going on. It was the end of the day. I wanted to paint. I painted this. :)

End my student loans

Okay! Its official.

Started the weekend painting auction venture which I mentioned earlier. Here it is : I vow to set one new painting up on ebay once a weekend until i'm totally out of paintings (hah.. like that would ever happen!) or my student loans are done with. These aren't crappy paintings either! I love every single one but they aren't doing any good sitting around in the basement. Actually I've got this gut feeling that if I don't spread them far and wide some tragic fire will consume them and they will all vanish in one firy blaze. So, I need to find new homes for them. I've got 17 paintings queued up right now so I'm good for awhile.
About all this...Thoughts?

So, the plan is this. All proceeds from this venture directly go into vast student loans. This also means that I will starting making more traditional paintings.

End my student loans painting #1 - Fish and Boat! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190145565566 Auction ends Sep-04-07 18:35:10 PDT Spread the word! Thanks!

So, if you want a set (4 cards in all, full color double sided) give me an e-mail with an addy and I'll send a set over to ya! Questions? This offer stays open until I've run out or get overwelmed with going to the post office all the time.

Request for : Very scared Monkey is up for a Dentist visit with a Dr. Penguin. that's it.

requester : Vanessa (http://www.slaveprincess.deviantart.com/)

This request came in a little over a week ago, but it jumped way to the front of the list! See.... I'm riddled with nightmares of my teeth falling out. I couldn't stop from working on this. Just the day before yesteday I awoke from a horrid vivid dream of losing a crown (which i don't have!?!?) and watching it turn into a rather large marshmellow before evaporating into nothingness. then i rushed and looked into my dental coverage only to discover that I can only get 50% off one crown ever 5 calendar years. So I wasn't covered! I was petrified. Insurance and dental bills. Scary! Reminds me to floss my teeth, that's forsure. Haha.

fortituda invicibilia sunt

Was researching about my last name (Maguire) and found out that we have a family motto, crest, castle in northern ireland and history of kings going back to 1600s..! Motto's pretty cool. Justia et fortituda invincibilia sunt. Justice and fortitude are invincible. I'm always saying that I need to 'fortify' myself (most of the time with coffees and a big dinner) to get pyched up to do almost anything. Hehe. :) I'm just gonna trunkage that it 'Foritide is invincible' and keep that as my personal version.

Here is my rendition of the flying ghost king of the Maguire's.

Want to start selling paintings again. Well, need more like it. There is a stack of paintings sitting in the basement just asking to be liberated and student loans can really bite someone in the butt. Here's the news.
